Meet Lou

One Year On: Lou’s Story Still Inspires

A year ago, we met Lou—poet, mum, and breast cancer survivor. Her story struck a chord with so many in the Mater Chicks in Pink community.

Now, one year on, Lou is still writing, still finding ways to engage with the cancer survivorship community and will once again join the Sea of Pink in 2026.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2023, Lou’s journey was anything but straightforward. Her diagnosis: Triple Negative Breast Cancer—an aggressive form that demanded 16 rounds of chemo and 15 sessions of radiation. It was a tough road. But through it all, Lou turned to her lifelong love of writing to help make sense of the chaos.

“I was struggling to see the positives through it all, which isn’t like me—but once I surrendered to accepting what was happening, everything shifted for me,” Lou reflects.

Today, Lou is cancer-free—but her story is far from over. She’s become a passionate advocate for women navigating life after treatment, raising awareness about the emotional and physical toll that can linger long after the last appointment. And she’s not doing it alone.

With support from Mater Chicks in Pink, and thanks to the generosity of fundraisers like you, Lou found a community that walked beside her—literally and figuratively.

“Fundraising is such a powerful way to honour the women who’ve come before us,” Lou says. “It’s how we make sure no one goes through this alone.”

This March, you’ll find Lou among thousands walking as the Sea of Pink in March, walking with pride, purpose, and a whole lot of heart. She’s walking for herself, and for every woman who’s on a similar journey to hers.

You can be part of the story
